Keep me from lying to myself;
give me the privilege of knowing your instructions.

Oh, the old 'lying to myself'.
We all know lying is a sin, and we try not to do it to other people.... but what about ourselves?
We lie to ourselves about a lot of things: our appearance (both good and bad), our attitudes, how we treat people, etc.
And we can even lie to ourselves about our relationship with God.
We can think we are A-OK. "I haven't killed anyone. I'm a pretty good person. God should be happy with that."
But not killing isn't the only commandment we are supposed to keep.
Only you know your true relationship with God (as the preacher talked about yesterday). Don't lie to yourself about it. Really dig deep and look at your heart to see how much God truly lives there. If he's not there as much as you'd like/need, pray about it. You can never be too close to God :)

My devotions today ran along a similar path. One section struck me with its truthfulness: "The opposite of obedience is unbelief; the essence of obedience is belief. If you truly believe God is totally good and all powerful, if you truly believe He always acts for His children's benefit, you will obey whatever He asks of you. It is when you doubt these truths that obedience to the Lord becomes difficult." Both your post and this devotion seem to be nudging me to be honest about my relationship. I am willing. Like you said, you can never be too close to God.

Our relationship with God is about a lot more than not breaking the commandments - great point, Kelly! Each of us needs to examine our hearts and make sure we are in right relationship with God.
