Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Cor. 15:58

day 346: It's Up to You

2 Samuel 23:2
"The Spirit of the Lord speaks through me;
his words are upon my tongue."

**********

Did you know that you have an amazing responsibility in life? It's called 'Free Will' (ah, such a fun thing).

God gives you words to use to: tell others about Him, bless Him, encourage others, sing, speak, write, etc.

He puts these words in your mind, your heart, and your tongue--

But it's up to you to get them out.

Ever have something on the tip of your tongue, but you just don't say it (either you're afraid, scared, or don't want to sound like an idiot)?

God can't 'make' you do anything. He gives you the tools, puts you in situations, and know how you will react, but He doesn't make you do it. You have the choice.

Have a prayer request that just won't leave you alone at church? It's up to YOU to say the words at church.

Have a song/story that you know is from God? It's up to YOU to write it.

Have a song you want to sing at church? It's up to YOU to do it.

Have you ever been at the store and feel God telling you to tell someone about Him? It's up to YOU to do it. He's not going to make you a puppet and (as easy as it would be actually) make you do things for Him. Free will...

God gives you the desires and the opportunities. It's up to you to MOVE and do it.

Do you allow God to speak through you?

God Bless You :)

day 345: My Lamp

2 Samuel 22:29-30
Oh Lord, you are my lamp,
The Lord lights up my darkness.
In your strength I can crush an army;
with my God I can scale any wall.

***********

I'm not going to lie. I'm a bit sad. I have nothing really to be sad about-- but I guess-- this blog kind of gets me down.

What?  It's an encouragement blog. How can it get you down? If it gets YOU down, what does that say about us?

I know.. I know!

You see, I think I'm doing something wrong. Either I'm not following God and telling you what you should hear OR I'm not doing it in the right way. I thought maybe I was reading too much into the 0 or 1 comments posts, but it's been going on for while. I write it, so it must be me.

I don't know exactly what I should do with this blog-- what to change-- what to keep--- how to make it where you want to read/respond. But I know that God is telling me something about it. But (like a lot of times) I can't figure it out.

This is my wall (well, one of them). Kelly would have given up a few months ago, but I made a commitment to God to write for every day for a year. It's too close to give up now... and then what?

God is my strength in this. He's the one keeping me going and telling me that it's ok. He doesn't judge me by the amount of hits or comments (or book offers).

God is my lamp. He shines in my darkness. I can't do anything without Him (though I try sometimes... and more often than not, I fail.).

Does this post have a point? Well, if it does, it's this: honor your commitments to God. And if you touch just one person, it's all worth it.

God Bless You

day 344: When the Disciples Didn't Understand

John 11:9-15

Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. During the day people can walk safely. They can see because they have the light of this world.

But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.” Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”

The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!” They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.

So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. Come, let’s go see him.”

****************

This is one of those times in Jesus' history that he got flabbergasted and aggravated. He had tried for three years to get these men to understand-- and they still didn't.

Of course they didn't. He understood that on the godly level, but He was also very human. And the human side of him was getting tired.

The disciples were very human too. The last time they were in the city, they were nearly killed. They weren't looking forward to that again.

You can picture them secretly wishing that Lazarus would get well on his own so they wouldn't have to go back there.

Jesus knew all along that Lazarus was dead, and He also knew that the disciples weren't ready for their own ministries just yet. Time was running out-- He knew something drastic would have to be done to get their attention. Raising a four day old dead man would do the trick...

When Jesus told the disciples that Lazarus was sleeping, they didn't get it. They thought that he was getting better since he could sleep. You can imagine the sigh of relief when they thought they wouldn't have to go back to the city.

Then... Jesus finally told them plainly that Lazarus was dead and they were going back.

Their faces fell and fear engulfed their hearts.

Jesus tells us things all of the time too. He gives us subtle hints and nudges. But at times we are like the disciples-- wanting to think our own ways instead of Jesus'. I'm sure somewhere deep in their hearts they knew Lazarus was dead, but they didn't want to admit it.

So Jesus finally had to tell them plainly. He does the same for us.

The people who followed Jesus in those days were exactly like we are. They had doubts, questions, fears-- and definitely weren't perfect. When you look at Jesus' relationship with them, we see his relationship with us.

Sure He got aggravated-- but He never lashed out at them. He was patient. He took time to care for them.

He does the same for us.

God Bless You :)

day 343: Stories of Faith

Hebrews 11:32-40

How much more do I need to say? It would take too long to recount the stories of the faith of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and all the prophets.

By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions,

quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the sword. Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight.

Women received their loved ones back again from death.

But others were tortured, refusing to turn from God in order to be set free. They placed their hope in a better life after the resurrection.

Some were jeered at, and their backs were cut open with whips.

Others were chained in prisons.

Some died by stoning, some were sawed in half, and others were killed with the sword. Some went about wearing skins of sheep and goats, destitute and oppressed and mistreated. They were too good for this world, wandering over deserts and mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.
All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised.

For God had something better in mind for us, so that they would not reach perfection without us.

~God Bless You this Memorial Day~

day 340: Coming Closer to God.

Hebrews 10:22
Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart.

***************

About a week ago, my kids and I picked up 'God and Me! (2 and 3) Devotions for Girls (ages 6-9)' by Diane Cory at Lifeway Bookstore. Last year, I made books myself for us to 'homeschool' the Bible. This year, I got these (much easier and less ink...).

Today's lesson in the 2 book really stuck with me. It is about how God wants to be our friend like with Moses. He might not come down and physically stand in front of us, but He makes Himself known in other ways. And just like a friend, He wants us to talk to Him about everything, not just the bad.

(side note) Have you ever had a friend that only talked to you when he/she needed something? You still love them, but sometimes you wish for different conversation. That's how God is. He wants to hear our problems, but He also wants to hear our joys, our happiness, our accomplishments. What parent doesn't want to hear good things besides 'I WANT' all the time?

Part of the lesson today was to write some things that can draw you closer to God. Here is my 6 year old's list:

1. Pray

2. Read the Bible

3. Go to Church

4. Say Heavenly Things.

Four little things that would help us all.

*Special thanks to Katie for helping out with today's post. Mama couldn't have done it without you...*

God Bless You

day 339: Proverbs 3:3

Proverbs 3:3
Never let loyalty and kindness leave you! Tie them around your neck as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart. Then you will find favor with both God and people.

******************

Being nice to people is an easy concept, right? You treat them the way you want to be treated--

But, let's be honest, it's easier said than done. Especially with people you love.

What makes you yell at someone you love, but you would die if you did it to a stranger on the street? Why do we treat some people better than others?

Simply because we love them (how's that for a 'thanks for loving me'...). When we love someone, we let our guards down. We know they love us back, so we can get away with more. I'd never dream of throwing a wet diaper at a person I met at the grocery store (yep, I did it once a few years ago when I was SOOOOO mad at my husband. Not my finest moment.)

Imagine what it would be like if we treated our family, friends, loved ones with as much self-control and compassion as a stranger on the street.

What if your marriage or friendship is in one of those 'lulls' (you know the ones where you can't for the life of you figure out what you have in common with your spouse or friend)? Should you let loyalty slide? It's easy. Truly easy. The devil sees your mind and sees how vulnerable you are; and yeah, he strikes. That's when you really need to pray and open up your bible to fight him off. The world is tempting---

If you love your family like your neighbor (and vice versa) then you will find favor with both God and people. That sounds good to me :)

God Bless You.

day 338: The Sparkle in Your Eye

Psalm 13:3
Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die.

****************
I admit that I've lost a certain sparkle in my eye. I guess you could call it a bit of writer's block mixed in with I can't do this.

I'm sure you can relate in some way.

There are times when we aren't as sparkly as others:
*in our marriages

*with our kids

*with our jobs

*with our hobbies

*with our relationship with God.

*etc.

There are times when things seem boring or mundane or you just do something because you are supposed/have always done it. It's ok to have those days-- but it's not ok to give up during those times. Take a break, take time for yourself, talk, pray about it before you quit or stop or get so badly beaten down that you don't see a way out.

God will put a sparkle back in your eye.

Yesterday, I couldn't imagine writing anything else ever again (did I mention the 'I can't do this' part?...) Today, I've written all of this AND have decided to write a short story for an opportunity to be read by my favorite author (Colleen Coble). And... Well I've been trying to work out the kinks in novel number 2 (while trying not to think about #1).

It's fun to go back and see how God answers prayers-- If you've lost your sparkle, pray about it. Life is dull without it.

God Bless You.

day 336: Ruth-- And my new book :)

Ruth 1:14
And again they wept together, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye. But Ruth clung tightly to Naomi.

****************
This is one of my favorite verses in the book of Ruth. It shows how different Orpah and Ruth were. Orpah gave in and kissed Naomi. Ruth clung to her.

In my new eBook, I described it this way:

I feel bad for Orpah. She chose what would be tempting to us all: security, family, familiarity.

This is the end of Orpah’s story. That’s it. She went back home, probably found a husband, and had a good earthly life. But the people of Moab didn’t worship God and unless she kept the faith she learned from her years with Naomi, she died a sinner.

Orpah made the ‘easy’ choice.

Ruth made the hard one: choosing the unfamiliar, the far from home, the scary, the unknown, the way that took faith.

One woman had a good life. One had a book named after her. (Which lady would you rather be?)
I underlined clung in that verse because Ruth clung to Naomi. Have you ever had a kid cling to your leg? There is no way under the sun that you can get out of that death grip. You can be a 300 pound wrestler and if a 30 pound tike gets his/her arms and legs wrapped around you, you’re done for-- tapped out, unable to move, kid wins.

Ruth clung to Naomi to let her know that there was no way she would be able to move without her. Wherever Naomi walked, Ruth would walk to (since she was attached and all). Naomi had no choice but to relent.

There are so many things to learn about and be inspired by in the book of Ruth. I wrote a 5 part Bible Study on it for the church's women's group, and I thought I'd publish it online for anyone who wanted to read it.  It's free, and you can share it if you want (if you decide it might be a good fit for one of your own Bible Studies).

Ruth:Faith, Loyalty, Love, Redemption

(Click the picture to go to the book homepage).
A five part Bible Study on the book of Ruth. This humorous and heartfelt study brings the verses to life and shows how love and respect can change the world.

Like I said, it's completely free and can be downloaded on many formats.
If you get it, I'd love some feedback. What did you like? What didn't you like? What did you find helpful?

God Bless You :)

day 333: Not Unjust

Hebrews 6:10

“For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do.”

********************
This is the verse of the day over at biblegateway.com. Just like yesterday's verse, I read it--nearly cried-- and knew that I had to share it with you.

I'm sorry the explanations and 'bloggy' parts of this have dwindled, but sometimes we just have to read and see what the verse means to us (not some lady behind a keyboard).

Have a great Friday-- and I sincerely hope this verse is meant for you today.

God Bless You.

day 332: Strong and Courageous

2 Chronicles 32:7

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. 8 With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and to fight our battles.”
*************************

I don't have any big, long story for you today. I don't have pictures or any deep insight.

I saw this verse and needed it.

I thought someone else might too.

...... BUT WITH US IS THE LORD OUR GOD TO HELP US AND TO FIGHT OUR BATTLES.

God Bless You.

day 330: Just Be Patient

Ruth 3:18
Then Naomi said to her, "Just be patient, my daughter, until we hear what happens. The man won't rest until he has settled things today.

*******************

If you knew how many times I checked my email every evening, you'd know I'm not a very patient person.

Same for blog comments...

For the mail...

And of course, when something exciting is coming up (like vacation or school break), the week leading up to it is the S-L-O-W-E-S-T W-E-E-K E-V-E-R.

When I was trying to get pregnant, the 'Two Week Wait' produced torture. The last month of pregnancy when the baby 'could' come 'any day' was exciting and impatient.

I kind of think I use up my patient quota at work and then it goes downhill when I get home.

Anyway, enough about me-- How about you? Are you a patient person? Or are you constantly checking your email, facebook, text messages, tapping your foot in line at the store, checking your watch--waiting for 'something'.

Ruth had a very big, exciting thing happen to her. She had asked Boaz to marry her-- all she needed was his answer. He wanted too, but there was a closer relative to her deceased father-in-law and if he wanted to marry her, it was his right. Boaz decided to ask about it that day at the town gate.

All Ruth could do was wait.

Naomi told her to 'just be patient'. Just let it happen. There was nothing she could do about it anyway.

It's good to be excited for things; it keeps life interesting. But we also need patience to balance it out.

Something ole Kelly needs to work on. How about you? (I ask as I try my hardest not to check comments every two minutes tonight-- ;))

God Bless You,

Kelly

day 329: A Cheerful Heart

Proverbs 15:15
... A cheerful heart fills the day with song (The Message Bible)

**********************

This is the last week of school for us teacher-folks in my district. Wednesday is the last whole day; Thursday is a teacher work day; Friday is a half day (we leave at 10:15).

So, you'd think I'd have woken up with a cheerful heart full of song.

(Actually I woke up tired.)

Today is a new day-- the beginning of a brand new week! Lots of possibilities await you (and me). Lets think of it as a Cheerful Monday-- not just a gateway to Tuesday (which brings us closer to Friday).

Fill your day with song :)

God Bless You,

Kelly

day 326: Do You Cling?

Ruth 1:14
And again they wept together, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye, but Ruth clung to Naomi.

**************
I feel bad for Orpah. She chose what would be tempting to us all: security, family, familiarity.

This is all we know of Orpah's story. She went back home, probably found a husband, had some kids, and had a great earthly life. But the people of Moab didn't worship God and unless she kept the faith she learned from Naomi, she died a sinner.

Orpah made the 'easy' choice.

Ruth made the hard one.

One woman had a safe, 'normal', unscary life. One had a book in the most read book of all time named after her (Which lady would you rather be?)

I underlined clung in the verse. Ruth clung to Naomi like a child who won't let your leg go (and there is nothing you can do because when a child clings, they are stronger than an adult any day).

Ruth clung to Naomi to let her know that there was no way Naomi could move without her. Wherever Naomi walked, Ruth would go (since she was attached and all). Naomi had no choice but to let her go with her.

Think about this is more 'spiritual' terms. Orpah chose the safe, more appealing, worldly way where everything was already mapped out for her and she knew she'd be happy. Ruth chose the unknown spiritual life. She didn't know how it would turn out, but she had faith that it would be okay.

Think about yourself. Are you an Orpah who needs the security of the world? Or are you a Ruth who clings to Jesus no matter what the world tells you to do? Which would you like to be?

God Bless You,

Kelly

day 325: OK

Romans 6:8
And since we died with Christ, we know we will also live with him.

******************

We know that it will all be ok.

No matter what is happening to us, around us, inside us-- we know that in the end, it will be ok. And, in the words of Solomon, it won't matter what we've been through or what we've done; we know how the story ends.

I guess this could kind of seem sad in a way (talking about dying is always sad to me to be honest), but it's happy mostly. Sometimes we get nervous because we don't know what's going to happen-- we want 'spoilers' for our lives instead of reading the 'book' from beginning to end and enjoying the moment. But really, we DO know how it ends. We know where we will end up if we have accepted Jesus-- and everything else just comes out with the wash.

Are you worried about something today? Stressed? Upset? Pray about it. And if you want, we will pray about it too.

God Bless You

~Kelly

day 324: When You Have to Step Aside (Plus info on New Series!)

John 3:29
It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the best man is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy at his success.

********************
(Please read to the end of the post today for an announcement...)

If you don't know what's going on here, John the Baptists disciples are kinda upset that this 'Jesus' has came in and stole their thunder.

They had been the people the crowds flocked too-- they 'popular' ones for a while and then here comes the new guy, showing them up.

John's disciples didn't take very kindly to that.

They asked John, "Hey, why aren't you angry? He's stealing all our thunder!" (paraphrasing of course)

And John said, "I told you people I wasn't the Messiah, and I was just preparing the people. I'm happy for his success and I'm content to stand by his side and let him have the show."

I'm a jealous person (as we have covered before-- several times).

John the Baptist wasn't.

He knew what his job was for God and he fulfilled it. He didn't yell at God that he wanted a bigger power or complain that Jesus had more than he had-- He didn't plot against Jesus nor deny Him.

He simply and graciously stepped aside and let Jesus have control.

What a message for us!? Step aside and let Jesus have control.

**I wanted to announce that starting June 1st, I'm going to be blogging through the Book of John. I've been asked if I was going to write another Bible Study this year and the answers is yes and no. Yes, I'm going to write on John, but it's going to be more commentary than Bible Study.

What does that mean for you? I'd love for you to link up and read along with me :) Or maybe even blog about John for 21 days (trust me, you will have plenty of material). There will be a blog hop opening May 31st when I make the new 'Blogging Thru The Book of John' tab above.

Ideas? Suggestions? Does this sound like something you are exited to read and/or participate in?  I'm SO exited to write it!! I've loved learning about John in our Sunday School Class.

God Bless You,

Kelly

day 323: The Wind

John 3:8
Just as you can hear the wind but can't tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can't explain how people are born of the Spirit."

**************

Humans are fascinating creatures. We have to know the origins of things (hence why 'origin' movies like Wolverine do so well....). We want to know the very beginning and the very end-- and if we could understand everything in the middle, we'd appreciate that as well.

The thing is, there are somethings we can't understand. We don't 'exactly' know why the wind blows or where it comes from. You can't see it (only the results of it).

That's why some folks have a hard time religion-- somethings can't be explained (even Jesus said as much). Somethings you just have to believe it and take that as enough.

Like salvation-- when you try to explain it, it doesn't make a lot of sense. It's a feeling, something that happens inside, and it's hard to put into the exact words.

It's when you turn off your human mind (wondering how) and open your spiritual heart (and feel).

How do you describe 'being born in the Spirit' to people?

God Bless You,

Kelly

day 322: Why Do You Go do Him?

John 6:26
Jesus replied, "The truth is, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you saw the miraculous sign."

****************

I just finished writing my first book (bells... whistles... happiness...). In the book, the man feller, Asher, turns to God because he has no other options (and his woman needs his help). He turns to God because he needed something from God.

Which is common I think.

Even among Christians, sometimes we only turn to God when we need something from him.

Thousands of people literally hunted Jesus down because they wanted something from him (hint: it wasn't salvation....). They wanted him to feed them like he had the day before. They wanted something so they sought him.

Asher wanted something from God-- so he seeked him.

What about you? Do you seek Jesus because you need something or because you are thanking him for everything he has given you?

I have to laugh... I was going to end this post with a request to pray for this book to find an agent--- but wouldn't that just defeat the point? I don't need to just ask for things from Jesus-- He's not a genie (of course, he does like us to ask, but he likes us to just talk too sometimes).

So I'm going to say this-- Lord, thank you for giving me the idea and ability to write this book... now, please make it possible for others to read it (in paperback).

God bless you :)

day 319: Love

Colossians 3:11

In this new life, it doesn't matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave or free, Christ is all that matters and he lives in all of us.

***************

We shouldn't let anything about us or others keep us from serving Jesus or for that matter, telling others about him.

We live in the 'new life'. In the New Life, Jesus is all that matters. And he lives in all of us.

Jesus was all about love and acceptance-- not hate.

It's hard to be like Jesus, but we need to work toward it. He had the right idea :)

God Bless You,

Kelly

Four New Blogs Added to the Directory! :)

No.. it's not because I'm lazy and haven't gotten around to adding blogs, but I have been blessed with so many requests for blogs to be added to the directory. We now have THIRTY blog listed in the directory!! Praise the Lord :)

You folks make me smile :)

So... between last night and today, I had four requests that met the criteria. I've been busy adding them all tonight :)

Here they are:

5 Minutes for Faith
5 Minutes for Faith where faith lifts and encourages moms everyday. It's moms writing for moms and is a sister site to 5 Minutes for Mom. We would love to have you come over for a visit

Counting My Blessings
Counting My Blessings by Deb is a safe place. A place where faith is about relationship and not rules. A place where kindness and compassion matter. A place for friends to gather and share their faith.

Encouragement of Faith: My blog is basically a testimony of life that with God anything is possible.  I use my life lessons and struggles to show that with faith we can make it.  Encouragement of faith came about after a friend of mine past away from cancer.  She always wanted to see the good in others and when I spoke at her memorial service I was reminded that life is to short to just stand by without bringing God's joy to others.

God is Always Faithful: Come enjoy a daily devotional about God's Faithfulness!  Let's study God's Word together and find joy in the journey with Christ!  (We are still working on the button)

Please check out these lovely blogs and all other blogs listed in the directory. You will be blessed. Also, if you haven't noticed the large blog roll to the side, I've added all of the blogs listed to my front page so you can easily see updates from them. :)

If you are interested in listing your blog in the directory, please email me at ohthatmomagain (at) yahoo (dot) com.

IF you've sent a request and I haven't gotten back to you, please re-send. Sometimes if I check it, I'll forget to go back and do it (I'm sorry about that).

God Bless You,

Kelly
