Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. 1 Cor. 15:58

True Happiness-- Mike R.

"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled."

Matthew 5:6

We have all heard this line from Jesus preaching on the mountain. Jesus starts off his preaching with sharing what has become the 8 beatitudes. In most bibles, the title under this section is called, " True happiness" Or something along those lines. Usually with the word happiness. Why? The Latin word, 'beatitudo' which literally means Happiness.

I'm not sure about other people, but I have always wondered what it meant by 'Righteousness' The base word righteous means (according to my bible dictionary) Doing what is right; Without sin.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for doing right; they will be filled.

That leaves the door open for what is right? How do we know whats right?

So instead of doing right it should be:

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst to do what God wants; for they will be filled!

This great list Jesus gives us is the key to true happiness; or perfect happiness. Specifically in this one, Jesus proclaims to us, to do the work of God. To focus our lives on God.  To WANT to do what God wants. To be filled with great spirit, and be guided to do Gods will.

God calls us all to hunger for him. He wants us to come to him. To unlock true happiness. What a gift God gave us of Free will. It's amazing how God, our heavenly creator,  who wanted all of us in heaven, created such a gift for us.

It was for exactly this. He wanted to see who would hunger and thirst for his word; for his food. He wanted the true faithful. Those who go to be filled; not for a show. God fills us if we go with a hungry spirit to do HIS plan. Which means putting down all our selfish ways, and entering into Gods Almighty Love.

With each new beatitude, Jesus offers two things: 1 A problem and 2 A solution. He puts forward a problem. A spiritual problem or an earthly problem. But with every problem their is Jesus is always their to offer a solution. Jesus is their to fix everything. He gives us a problem. Okay, people who hunger and thirst for what God wants. Then he offers a solution of God will fill them; they will be filled.

Jesus finished this off with saying, " For they will be filled"  Jesus gives us everything we need-spiritually... To live that perfect spiritual life. but ....Are we ever filled? Are we ever happy with what we have? Do we ever want more than what we got?

Imagine this: Imagine you had EVERYTHING you ever wanted. A New Car, A Brand New house, All toys for kids, A New t.v a new Ipad... Imagine that! wouldn't that be Great? Certainly NOT! If we had everything we ever wanted we would not be happy still. Nope not to one bit. With SEEING what others have, we would have 'forgotten' to have had something.

It's in watching the t.v and sources of media, that tells us we are wrong. The t.v is wrong. Your body is wrong. Your car is wrong. You Are Wrong. All because you don't have the newest thing. It's the fear that fills us of the thought of being wrong. The thought that you will never be good enough. That you will never have the right thing.

But you do...

In fact we all do....

We all have Jesus. It's Right. We all have what we have. And that's RIGHT. Jesus doesn't want us to have everything we ever wanted because he knew that it would never be enough to make us happy. With that Jesus tells us what TRUE Happiness is. It's not by having material items and keeping up with society, it is being hungry and thirsty for God.

Everything we are is RIGHT.

Pope Benedict had once said,

Christians must not be afraid to go “against the grain” in order to live their faith, resisting the temptation to “conform”

Do not be afraid not to have the newest thing. DO NOT be afraid to go against the grain to live your faith. Go to God Hungry, and thirsty, For What God wants, For his body for his blood; for his word. God fills us all if we want to be filled. Blessed be God Forever!

Jesus wants us to be happy. He wants us to, feel happy in our heart- Which he supplies. And not just momentary happiness from materials. For Jesus did say, " Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness .. For they will be filled.

I Haven't Forgotten...

I figured I should post... actually I should have posted Saturday... and Sunday... and Monday... and Tuesday... and oh yeah, tonight. I'm so behind on the bible in the year thing it's pitiful.

I don't have any excuse, really. No one is sick. Everything is going great at home. The husband and I are getting along. Kids are going great. I've been writing on the books a lot and getting ready for a blog book tour the first week of March.

So, why can't I seem to find the 'spunk' to write these daily posts... or more over... why not even read the Bible like I'm supposed to be doing (did I mention I haven't even been doing that?... ugh)?

I have on idea, to be honest.

I bought a journal and I've been working on that. It's about how each day is your best day. I got to thinking that maybe I should focus more on getting myself 'better' before I tried to write about things for you guys.

I don't know...

I've missed 5 days-- 10 chapters-- a lot of Numbers. In the long run, Numbers isn't that bad of a chapter to miss writing about. It's important, but, I mean, it says basically the same thing ;)

I'll see where I am. Where I need to be. And hopefully go from there. I haven't forgotten you all, nor have I forgotten this blog. I think my brain just took a vacation. I've been writing pretty much nonstop (ie every day) since June of 2011 on something or other...a blog post, a short story, a book. I'm still working on a book (2 actually) and I guess my brain's tired.

No excuse... I know.

I'll do better.

I do want to know what you've thought of the past 5 days (cringe) worth of readings. Anything that stuck out at you? Anything you want to talk about?

The Talking Donkey (Days 45 and 46/365)

Day 45: Numbers 19-21

Sorry this is a day late... I promised the Husband I'd watch a movie with him and not internet/write. We watched the Bourne Legacy which has nothing to do with this blog (except it was pretty good ;) )

So, for this reading...

*Moses strikes the rock instead of speaking to it (which God didn't care for)

*Aaron died (made me sad).

*The Israelites started conquering the Canaanites.

Day 46: Numbers 22-24

And then we get to one of the most awesome stories in Numbers...

Numbers 22-24 (New Living Translation)

Balaam and His Donkey

21 So the next morning Balaam got up, saddled his donkey, and started off with the Moabite officials. 22 But God was angry that Balaam was going, so he sent the angel of the Lord to stand in the road to block his way. As Balaam and two servants were riding along, 23 Balaam’s donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword in his hand. The donkey bolted off the road into a field, but Balaam beat it and turned it back onto the road.

24 Then the angel of the Lordstood at a place where the road narrowed between two vineyard walls. 25 When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it tried to squeeze by and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall. So Balaam beat the donkey again. 26 Then the angel of the Lordmoved farther down the road and stood in a place too narrow for the donkey to get by at all. 27 This time when the donkey saw the angel, it lay down under Balaam. In a fit of rage Balaam beat the animal again with his staff.

Okay... so you get the idea.. Balaam doesn't know why the donkey has stopped so he keeps beating him to go on. The donkey (being the smart one at the moment) is all like, "Ummmm... no!"

28 Then the Lord gave the donkey the ability to speak. “What have I done to you that deserves your beating me three times?” it asked Balaam.

Soooo... the Donkey talked to Balaam. And Balaam did what we all would do if any animal talked to us...

He talked back...

29 “You have made me look like a fool!” Balaam shouted. “If I had a sword with me, I would kill you!”

And not only did he talk to him...

30 “But I am the same donkey you have ridden all your life,” the donkey answered. “Have I ever done anything like this before?”

“No,” Balaam admitted.

He had a full blown conversation!

31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the roadway with a drawn sword in his hand. Balaam bowed his head and fell face down on the ground before him.

32 “Why did you beat your donkey those three times?” the angel of the Lord demanded. “Look, I have come to block your way because you are stubbornly resisting me. 33 Three times the donkey saw me and shied away; otherwise, I would certainly have killed you by now and spared the donkey.”

That's just awesome to me lol. I love the story of Balaam and his donkey, and how Balaam was sent to curse the Israelites... and instead he blessed them! Much to the chagrin of the feller that sent him to curse them.

Rebellion (day 44/365)

There is a lot in these 2 chapters. First of all, there is a rebellion of Korah and 250 other men. They were tired of Moses and his leadership and wanted to go back to Egypt where they at least had food.

God didn't take to that kindly.

Read and see what happened to them...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Okay, I'll tell you. They were swallowed up and buried alive!

Man!

What did you think of today's chapters?

Fear and Wandering (Day 43/365)

Numbers 13-15

And here's where it gets real...

So, the Israelites sent 12 people to scout the land of Canaan (even though God told them they would conquer it, they 'knew' better than God...)

They saw giants living there and got scared (as we all would).

They came back and riled up the people. The people wanted to go back to Egypt (where they had food and non-giants... they seemed to forget the slavery part and all) and wanted a new leader.

The only 2 who wanted to go and do what God told them were Caleb and Joshua.

Long story short, God got mad.... like royally ticked and said that since they didn't trust Him, he'd make sure none of them entered the promised land. Only Caleb and Joshua would.

You can imagine how that went over with everyone else.

I don't remember exactly where I read it... but I believe it was only 7 or 11 miles from the Red Sea to Canaan. And they had to wander it... for FORTY YEARS!

It's a hard lesson for us all to learn. Sometimes God puts something in our path and we jump the gun. Then it ends up taking longer to get what we were 'supposed' to have years ago because we thought we knew better.

Anyone want to share something in their life that you 'knew' better than God and how it backfired?

Wanting More (day 42/365)

Numbers 10-12

There isn't a lot to write about with today's reading. The Israelites were complaining because even though God had given them food, it wasn't the type of food they wanted.

I think we can all relate to that. God blesses us with things, but it's not exactly what we want or how we want it OR when we want it. As humans, we always want 'more'.

I remember thinking, "God, if you can just let me write a first draft of a novel, I'll be happy...."

"God, if you can help me get an agent, I'll be happy...."

"God, if you can get this book published, I'll be happy...."

"God, if I can sell (so many) books, I'll be happy..."

"God, if I can be in paperback, I'll be happy...."

Sheesh, I should be the happiest person in the world because I have 3 1/2 complete first drafts. 3 are contracted to a book publisher and one is 22,000 words in. It's always 'something' else will make me happy..

When the Israelites got the quail, they were happy-- but it ended up killing some of them. God knew the manna was best for them, but ended up giving them what they were complaining for.

It's very easy to fall into that trap!

Do you have  'something' that will make you happy? Will it really make you happy or do you think you'll want something bigger and better?

2 Days Worth of Numbers (Days 40 and 41)

I fell asleep last night (again) and missed posting so I decided I'd combine these 2 days.

Num. 4-6 (day 40)

First, it talks about the tribes in the bigger group of Levi's and their job. Can you imagine picking up that HUGE tabernacle and carrying it where ever you went? Wow! Sometimes, we have a hard time even 'picking up' our Bible for church....

Then there are some laws about skin diseases which I assume was to keep disease down.

Then what to do with a woman who is accused of cheating on her husband (it seems pretty horrible if you ask me...)

And then we learn about the Nazirites-- Do you know who the most 'famous' Nazirite is? (I'm sure you do...)

Num. 7-9 (day 41)
A bunch of people (12) brought the same things as an offering of dedication of the tabernacle.

The Levites were dedicated for service in the tabernacle. They would serve from age 25-50.

Even 'unclean' people were required to do the Passover celebration, but a month later.

Sometimes they Israelites could camp for a few weeks... sometimes only a day. I can't imagine how frustrating that had to be for them. Maybe if we understood that, we could understand how they acted in later chapters/books.

So, what have you read that has seemed interesting? Would you care to share?

Love = Obedience by Jan Christiansen

Love = Obedience

“Keep my commands and follow them…”  Leviticus 22:31a

"If you love me, you will obey what I command.” John 14:15

“Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.  Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me.” John 14:23-24

God isn’t all that impressed when we study the Scriptures, when we memorize them, when we can quote them or even when we can teach the Word of God to others. What impresses God is when we obey His Word, when we allow it to change our lives, to alter our behavior.

Just think about it…

What if you told your daughter to go clean her room. Thirty minutes later she comes back and proudly announces,  “Mom, Dad, you would be so proud of me. I memorized what you said. I even wrote it down in my journal. In fact can quote it and I Googled it, so if you want, I can quote it in both the Greek & Hebrew.”

“Did you clean your room?” you ask.

The answer is no.

As kids we knew better than to try to pull something like that with our earthly fathers, but as Christians, don’t we sometimes do that with our Heavenly Father?

~Jan

Numbers (Day 39/365)

I'm sorry this is late... I read it... and then I fell asleep (whoops).

We are on Numbers now... one of the easiest books of the Bible to read... why? Because there are a bunch of numbers ;) I like Numbers. I think it's interesting to read about how one small group of people could grow as much as Jacob's group did.

One thing to notice: Jacob had 12 sons (so you'd think they were the 12 tribes).. and they are... but their not...

There is no tribe of Joseph. Joseph's portion was given to his 2 sons Manasseh and Ephraim.

So that would make 13 tribes...

Except that Levi's tribe was chosen as the priests and not 'counted' (they counted, but not in the census)

That leaves 12 tribes: 10 out of 12 brothers-- and 2 grandkids.

Did anyone else get anything different out of it?

The Year Of Jubilee (Day 38/365)

We have come to the end of Leviticus and something pretty interesting.

The Year of Jubilee

Every 50  years,

*the land went back to the original owners

*people who had to sell themselves to be servants were freed

*there was a huge year of celebrations and not working

*debts were forgiven

*everything was reset...

Doesn't that sound AWESOME!!!

How many times did the Israelites celebrate this Year of Jubilee?

(I'll go ahead and tell you...)

The year of Jubilee was celebrated.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
ZERO times.

Ever.

God gave them this perfect plan for economic and agricultural life and they NEVER did it.

Because humans are SO much smarter than God...

Other things I learned:
*Being a 30 something girl, I'm worth 30 shekels of silver

*My husband, being a 30 something man, is worth 50 shekels of silver (so not fair...)

And...

The land could never be permanently sold.

SO, that gets us through Leviticus! 2 down... 64 to go (I think).

Adding a new blog and let's get real for a minute (day 37/365)

First off, I want to welcome Lillian to the Encourage 365 Devotional blog directory! Her blog looks awesome! I hope you can check it out.

COTTAGE SWEET COTTAGE
Making my home a place of grace with a love for organization, recipes, thrifting and, of course, devotions.

**The second part of this is more of a question... What do you think (honestly) about blogging through the Bible in 365 days? I really enjoy reading it, but sometimes, it's hard to think of a blog post in Leviticus lol.

Between the lack of blog comments, interest in the monthly giveaway and everything else, I was wondering if I should continue posting the things daily OR maybe I should do a weekly round up post based on what I've read throughout the week. (that could work).

What are your thoughts?

~Kelly

(Today's reading is Leviticus 22-24 :) Seasons/festivals/pure oil/and Holy Bread. Tomorrow morning, there will be a post from the AMAZING Jan Christiansen! )

Laws of Conduct (Day 36/365)

Day 36: Leviticus 19-21

Leviticus 19:9 really stuck out at me:
"When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop...Leave them for the poor and the foreigners living among you."

This verse has a major impact on History. If you remember, the book of Ruth wouldn't have happened if not for this verse. Ruth never would have met Boaz (who was one of the few that still obeyed the law) and they wouldn't have had David's grandfather.

I thought that was pretty cool...

Spiritual Prostitution: Putting ones trust in mediums or those who consult with the spirits of the dead. (Lev. 20:6)

Question: What law in this section jumped out at you the most?

There are lots of interesting tidbits in this section.

Meet the Scapegoat by Rebecca Aarup (Day 35/365)

Meet the Scapegoat

Reading: Leviticus 16-18

Key Point: Being the Scapegoat isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Key Verse:  “The goat chosen to be the scapegoat will be presented to the Lord alive. When it is sent away into the wilderness, it will make atonement for the people.” Leviticus 16:10

Thoughts: Aaron was a godly priest, though he certainly had his setbacks (uh, need a golden calf anyone?). Apparently his two sons, Nadab and Abihu, chose to hang on to their daddy’s example of idolatry rather than his example of worshipping the one True God (sometimes our mistakes come back to haunt us).

In Leviticus 10, we read about the sin which caused Nadab and Abihu to literally be smoked off the planet by a just and holy God. Fast forward to chapter 16 and now Aaron is instructed on how to make atonement for their sins, as well as the sins of the Israelites.

For the most part I think we’re used to hearing the term “Scapegoat” in a negative light, usually we say someone is a scapegoat when they take the blame for someone else, otherwise known as being the fall guy. We don’t really want to be the scapegoat, do we? But in Leviticus 16:10 we see the true definition of a scapegoat.

Imagine you’re a goat, maybe your name is Billy (sorry, couldn’t help it), and you’re being led to the sacrificial altar of the high priest alongside your brother Jimmy Goat. You hear the people talking, discussing which one of you will be killed and which one will be spared. Nervously your heart begins to race, is today the day you get your throat slashed?

The lot has been cast and the verdict is in. Your beloved brother Jimmy gets sent to slaughter while you live to see another sunset. And yet, for some reason you’re getting a lot of attention for not being the sacrifice this time around. Turns out, you are a sacrifice too; you’re the sacrifice who gets to live. You are presented to the Lord as a living sacrifice (sound familiar?).  Your brother died in your place, and you get to live and tell everyone else about it. You’re not the fall guy; you’re the “goat who is departed” (Hebrew rendering of scapegoat).

Fast forward to Romans 12:1, “I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will accept. When you think of what He has done for you, is this too much to ask?” In other words, you are the scapegoat, and as such, you are acceptable to God. The only thing that makes you acceptable is His Son, the one who took the fall for you when He was sacrificed on the cross. Jesus was your scapegoat (the fall guy) and you are the scapegoat (the one who was departed) because, by the skin of your teeth, you have escaped death and passed into life.

You know, I think I like being the scapegoat. Now, as such, I must live up to my high calling as a living sacrifice. Let’s embrace our calling with gratitude, after all, “When you think of what He has done for you, is this too much to ask?” Let’s show the world what being a scapegoat really means.

In Which Kelly Discusses Bodily Functions... (Day 34/365)

WARNING: Body Function Talk Ahead!!!

Leviticus 13-15

This post is late because, honestly, I was watching the Super Bowl (sorry about that).

I wish I had read it sooner because these 2 chapters are some of my favorite in Leviticus.

Why?

I have no idea!

I just find them interesting.

Lev. 14:54 pretty much sums it up: "These are the instructions for dealing with serious skin diseases, including scabby sores, and mildew, whether on or in a house, and a swelling on the skin, a rash, or discoloration of skin."

Part of it is... ewwww.....

And part of it is... ahhhh!!!....

There are 2 other parts (the last 2 chapters) that interest me. Of course, being a lady, I found the menstrual cycle thing interesting (and very cool that it's even mentioned in the Bible. Not to be graphic, but I bet it was an... ordeal... back then dealing with that. They didn't have-- wings.)

The other part is the entire chapter 15-- male bodily discharges.

Now...

The first time I read this in B90, this caught my eye and I had to text my sister about it (aren't you glad you aren't my sister?)

Basically, the first part is a man with a 'discharge'.

And the second part of the chapter is when a man 'discharges' his... uh... self. His happy swimmers as it were.

Here's my question... how many different types of 'discharges' are there? The whole first part of Ch. 15, I *thought* I knew what was going on, but then at the end I was like, no... I had no idea.

I think I 'might' know, but I don't exactly know--

The bottom like is God cares about your health, and wash, wash, wash!

So, there ya have it... aren't you glad you waited all day for this post ;)

BTW, check back tomorrow because Rebecca Aarup actually has a GREAT post for you (and, as far as I know, there aren't any discharges...)

Introducing the Feb. Giveaway Prize! (Day 33/365)

Day 33: Leviticus 10-12

Main People:
Nadab, Abihu, Aaron, Moses

Key Points:
*Nadab and Abihu, Aaron’s sons, burnt the incense wrong and were killed in a fire explosion. This can be taken many ways. Maybe God did it to warn of disobedience. Maybe God did it because he knew if they couldn’t even do one simple thing obediently, how could they do all of their priestly duties. Or maybe (and this is my idea) God gave them specific instructions knowing if they didn’t follow it, the wrong combination of materials would make a huge blaze.

I’ve heard it said that if we followed the old testament guidelines (well except for the animal sacrifice and we don’t have to do that now because of Jesus) then we’d live longer and be healthier… Nadab and Abihu sure would have…

*The priests had to live by high standards: no drinking alcohol before going in the Tablernacle, must be able to distinguish between clean and unclean, and follow the rules God gave them to the letter. A HUGE responsibility.

*They could only eat animals who chewed cud and had split hooves. They could eat any ocean animal with fins and scales. There is a whole group of birds not to eat. They couldn’t eat winged insects that walked on the ground… except for a few exceptions. They couldn’t even touch then or become unclean themselves. RATS are unclean (I couldn’t agree more ;) )

*Rules for Childbirth:
*if a woman has a son, she’s unclean for 7 days. On the 8th day, the baby boy circumcised. Then she’s unclean for 33 days while she heals from the ‘not pleasant’ parts of child birth (trying to be vague for you guys reading this… there’s nothing glamorous about child birth ;) )

*if a woman has a daughter, she’s unclean for 2 weeks. After 66 days, she will be purified from the after child birth ‘unpleasantness’.

*after the allotted days, she will take a lamb or two turtledoves or two pigeons to be offered as a purification sacrifice.

*I read in my commentary that this was done to highlight her role as a new mother and relieved her of certain duties that probably made the early days with a new baby easier….Well, that would have been AWESOME!

Verses that Jumped Out at Me:
There isn’t one verse that jumped out at me. The childbirth part was interesting…

Question:
Are there any verses that jumped out at you?

Tomorrow’s Reading: Leviticus 13-15

Can You Lead Before Dealing with Your Own Sin? (Day 32/365)

Day 32: Leviticus 7-9

Main People:
Priests, Israelites, Moses, Aaron, Aaron’s sons

Key Points:
*There are some rules here that stuck out at me.  You can take them how you want to take them (or rather, how God lays it on your heart to take them…)
*Don’t eat fat (I’d be skinnier, probably, if I followed this one lol)
*Don’t consume blood from bird or animals (I like my food cooked
All the way… burned would be good ;) )

*Aaron and his sons were chosen as priests

*I thought it was interesting that Aaron had to do a sin offering for himself before he could do a sin offering for the Israelites. Our leaders have to have their own sins taken care of before they can help the community. It’s the same today. Preachers, leaders, (bloggers) have to take care of their sins first before they can even dream of helping others. That doesn’t mean you’ll never sin… the Israelites didn’t just kill one cow and it was done… it’s a continual process. One that will make us better people.

Verses that Jumped Out at Me:
Leviticus 9:24—Fire blazed forth from the Lord’s presence and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When the people saw this, they shouted with joy and fell face down on the ground.

Question:
What was the significance of making Aaron the high priest? How does that relate to Jesus?
