day 235: Right Under Their Noses

Matthew 13:55-56

Then they scoffed, "He's just the carpenter's sons, and we know Mary, his mother, and his brothers--James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas. All of his sisters live right here among us. Where did he learn all these things? And they were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.

The residents of Nazareth had known Jesus since he was a little boy. They'd watched him grow up, become a big brother, play in the streets, help his Mama with the shopping, work with his father doing carpentery.....

He wasn't "Jesus their Savior". He was Jesus, Mary's boy.

The thought that their Jesus-- a carpenter no less-- was a prophet made them scoff.  The idea that Jesus was the Messiah and performed miracles bordered on crazy.

Sometimes when things are familiar to us, we don't see the awesomess in them.

*We don't see the greatness in our husbands/wives when we are with them every day.

*We don't see the joy of a sunny day when it's been sunny for 15 days straight.

*We don't see the 'uniqueness' of something we see every day.

I wonder if that's why Christianity spreads so much quicker in places where its never been taught before. It's so easy to be desensetized church and God when you hear about it all of the time (or at least see a church on every corner even if you don't attend.)

These people knew Jesus from the time he was knee high to a grasshopper. They'd watched him grow up and couldn't wrap their heads around the fact that he was their Savior. Don't let how close you know God keep you from actually knowing who He is.
